The Ghost Cactus is a hauntingly beautiful and architecturally striking succulent that earns its name through its pale, almost white ghostly coloring — a dramatic departure from the typical green of most cacti. Despite its common name it is technically a Euphorbia, part of a vast family of succulent plants that mimic cactus form with equal drama and far less fuss. Its angular, branching stems create a bold, sculptural silhouette that looks as much like modern art as it does a houseplant. A genuinely stunning statement piece for bright windowsills, sunny shelves, and anyone who appreciates plants with serious visual presence.
Our plant experts recommend:
Requires as much bright light as possible — a south or west-facing windowsill that receives several hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal. The pale, ghostly white coloring is maintained and most striking in good light conditions. Insufficient light will cause the plant to revert toward green and produce weak, elongated growth that loses the tight, architectural form this plant is celebrated for.
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings — every 14–21 days during the growing season and even less frequently in winter. Like all euphorbias, it stores water in its stems and is highly drought-tolerant. Overwatering is by far the most common cause of decline. Always use a well-draining cactus mix and a pot with excellent drainage. Important: the milky white sap produced by Euphorbia is toxic and a skin and eye irritant — wear gloves when handling and wash hands thoroughly after contact.
Prefers low ambient humidity, consistent with its arid origins. Handles the dry air of heated indoor environments with ease. No supplemental humidity is needed and excess moisture in the air can actually promote fungal issues at the stem base. Good air circulation on a bright, open windowsill suits it perfectly.
